Carlos Barral was undoubtedly one of the most important Spanish editors of the 20th century, besides being a first-rate reader and critic. A complex and difficult poet, he is however an excellent prose stylist. His memoirs are divided into three volumes: Years of Punishment, which relates his childhood, adolescence and young adulthood in the years following the Civil War; The Inexcusable Years, which relates his experiences during the 1950's; and The Fleeting Hours, which closes the cycle with his mature adult life, with special reference to his cultural and literary life.
