An epic poem which relates the events of the first stage of the Arauco War between the Spanish and the Mapuches in the General Captaincy of Chile. This is the first work of highbrow literature dedicated to an American subject, since Ercilla, in contrast to the average Conquistador, was very well-educated. However, in spite of his artistic ambitions, the author was a participant in the conflict, and his chronicle of the conflict remains the most reliable first-hand account of the events.
