Guatemalan writer Miguel Ángel Asturias, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, is the author of El señor Presidente, an outstanding novel about a Latin American tyrant. Sadly, this literary tradition has been explored by Spanish-language authors because the character recurs so often. The best-known works in this genre are Yo, el Supremo, by Augusto Roa Bastos, El recurso del método, by Alejo Carpentier, and more recently La Fiesta del Chivo, by Mario Vargas Llosa. This book by Miguel Ángel Asturias—based on the figure of the Guatemalan dictator Manuel Estrada Cabrera—is particularly notable because it is one of the first works in this area, and it has a strength and vigor that remain fresh today.
