Berceo is the earliest known poet in Spanish literature and the first representative of the "mester de clerecía" school. This great religious poem, presented as a collection of 25 tales, is written is an intimate, personal style. Berceo interspersed his narrative with simple humor and realistic homely detail which accentuate his at times almost mystical reverence. His populism and rustic language continue to exercise their spell and charm the modern reader. His other best known work is a vivid account of the life of Santo Domingo de Silos.
