Salvador Garmendia is one of the most interesting novelists to come out of Venezuela in the 20th century. As García Márquez does with Macondo, Garmendia makes Memorias de Altagracia into a marvelous nostalgic journey through childhood and the rural world that disappears in adulthood, which he tries to preserve in this work.
