Will se tiene que enfrentar con unos hombres que intentan llevarse las cartas que su padre dejó a su madre. Esta última padece de una enfermedad mental y tiene que protegerla. Mata accidentalmente a uno de ellos y deja a su madre con una vecina. Se dispone a encontrar a su padre. De pronto Will entra en un mundo por una extraña ventana allí no hay adultos por unos seres llamados espantos. En este mundo llamado Cittàgazze conoce a Lyra y juntos consiguen la Daga Sutil y Will se convierte en portador de la daga. Lyra se hace amigo de un hombre que en realidad quiere robarle el aletiómetro y lo consigue. Por ello Will y Lyra va a su casa y (no os quiero contar que pasa con el aletiómetro al final) acaban volviendo a Cittàgazze. Los niños de esta ciudad se revelan contra ellos y las brujas los ayudan, se suben a sus escobas y los llevan a una montaña lejana.
