Skármeta is a Chilean author who was born on Nov. 7, 1940 in Antofagasta.

Skármeta, who graduated with a degree in philosophy and letters from the University of Chile’s Pedagogical Institute, has divided his time among literature, journalism, film directing and academia.

His first book was a collection of short stories titled El entusiasmo, which was followed byDesnudo en el tejado, winner of the Casa de las Américas Prize; El ciclista del San Cristóbal;and Novios y solitarios.

A film version of his short novel Ardiente paciencia was adapted for the cinema and released in 1995 under the title El cartero y Pablo Neruda.
