SALAS, Horacio

Born in Buenos Aires in 1938, Salas is a poet, essayist and historian who has published more than 30 titles.

Among his books of poetry, the most significant are Memoria del tiempo, Mate pastor, Gajes del oficio, Cuestiones personales and Dar de nuevo. His book El tango, una historia social de la música de Buenos Aires, is already in its ninth edition and has been published in France, Italy, Germany, Greece and Japan.

His work has been translated into 13 languages and has been awarded both the National Prize and City of
Buenos Aires Municipal Prize for excellence in both poetry and essay writing.

Salas has been culture secretary of Buenos Aires, director of the National Arts Fund and the National Library and is a permanent member of the Argentine Academy of History, the National Tango Academy and theBuenos Aires Lunfardo Academy.

In 2001, he was named by Congress as distinguished citizen of
Buenos Aires. The French government has also inducted him into the prestigious Order of Arts and Letters.
