PONIATOWSKA, Elena

Elena Poniatowska Amor was born in Paris on May 19, 1933.

A journalist for many years, one of her best-known works, La Noche de Tlatelolco, is a historical account of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre in Mexico City that includes interviews with survivors and relatives of the victims. Among her most important novels is Hasta no verte, Jesús mío.

Poniatowska has also directed short films and has been a lecturer at prestigious universities such as England’s Oxford and Cambridge.

She has received numerous awards during her career, including the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize,Colombia’s Proartes international prize in 1997 and the Alfaguara novel prize in 2001.

Her works have been translated into English, French, Italian, German, Polish, Danish and Dutch.
