POMBO GARCÍA DE LOS RÍOS, Álvaro

A Spanish poet and novelist born in the northern city of Santander on June 23, 1939, Pombo earned an arts degree from the University of Madrid and also a degree in philosophy from London’s Birkbeck College.

Pombo’s first book of poetry, Protocolos, was published in 1973 and he won El Bardo Prize in 1977 for another poetry collection titled Variaciones. That year he returned to Spain, after having lived in London since 1966, and published his first short-story collection, Relatos sobre la falta de substancia.

He won the inaugural Herralde Novel Prize in 1983 for El héroe de las mansardas de Mansard, the first book in Anagrama’s Hispanic Narratives collection.

Other important works by Pombo include El metro de platino iridiado, winner of the National Critics’ Prize, andDonde las mujeres, which was awarded the National Narrative Prize.

Pombo, who became a member of the Royal Spanish Academy on June 20, 2004, won the Planeta prize onOct. 16, 2006 for the novel La Fortuna de Matilde Turpín.
