Alejo Carpentier

A Cuban novelist, musicologist and music and theater critic, Carpentier was born in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1904 but spent his early childhood in Havana.

Known for his Baroque style, Carpentier lived for a time in self-imposed exile in Paris, but returned to Cuba after the triumph of Fidel Castro’s revolution in 1959.

Carpentier, who was awarded the Cervantes Prize in 1977, served as a diplomat at the Cuban Embassy in Paris until his death in 1980.
