Born in 1929 in the eastern Cuban town of Gibara, Cabrera Infante, in addition to being a writer, was founder of the Cinemateca de Cuba and a cultural attache in Belgium.

In 1965, one year after winning Spain’s Biblioteca Breve Prize, he broke with Fidel Castro’s Communist regime and moved to London, where he lived until his death.

He published his first short-story collection, Así en la paz como en la guerra, in 1960, and seven years later released the novel Tres tristes tigres, which sealed his place as one of the most important Spanish-language authors of the century.

His later works included La Habana para un infante difunto, Exorcismos de estilo and Holy Smoke, which was written in English. Cabrera Infante died in 2005.
