Gonzalo de Berceo

Gonzalo De Berceo was a Spanish poet who was born near the end of the 12up>th century in the Riojan village of Berceo and whose writings have been traced back to 1220.

Although little is known about his life, records from 1237 indicate that he was a priest. Religious themes were predominant in his works, the best-known of which are the poem Libro de Alexandre and the devotionals Loores de La VirgenMilagros de Nuestra Señora, and Duelo de la Virgen.

Though sometimes portrayed as a simple author moved by raptures of piety, Gonzalo was a man of some intellectual formation who produced works of great inspiration.
