Guillermo Arriaga, who was born in 1958 in Mexico City, is a renowned scriptwriter and producer who won the prize for best screenplay at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival for “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.”

Having grown up in a violent Mexico City slum, he lost his sense of smell at the age of 13 in a brutal street fight, something he says has served as inspiration for some of his best screenplays. 

Arriaga and Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu have collaborated on several film projects, including the highly acclaimed “Amores Perros,” which offers a jolting look at the dark underbelly of Mexican life.
