Classroom Spotlight: Jessenia Martinez teaching Spanish immersion at Innocademy

ZEELAND TWP. — Innocademy teacher Jessenia Martinez has taught Spanish her entire teaching career, but made a big transition about five years ago.

She started in traditional, introductory Spanish classes. But after seeing the Spanish immersion program at Innocademy when her child began there, she decided it was time for a change.

“I was first introduced to the different teaching and what that looked like and I changed fields,” Martinez said. “Instead of teaching Spanish like an introductory course, it’s all day, every day.”

The middle school students Martinez teaches at Innocademy do their language arts and social studies learning in Spanish, while math and science are done in English. By immersing students in Spanish, students are more interested in the learning, Martinez said.
