Joan Margarit, Cervantes Award 2019

The Catalan poet will receive the Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana Award.

Joan Margarit has been awarded the highest literary accolade of the Spanish language for his “profound accomplishment of poetic work which is written in a clear and always innovative manner, enriching the Spanish as well as the Catalán language.  The poet Joan Margarit (Sanahuja, Lérida, 1938) has been awarded the Premio Cervantes (Cervantes Award) given by the Ministry of Culture in Spain, which is considered the most important literary award and has a prize value of 125,000 Euros. 

The Secretary of Culture, José Guirao, announced while reading the poem, “No tires las cartas de amor” (Don’t throw away love letters) the decision of the jury panel, adding that “through his work, Margarit has conveyed with great mastery the diverse culture of Spain.”
