Spanish publishers that survived the economic crisis and ‘the duopoly’

Six publishing houses explain their survival strategies in a run-down economy and a sector (culture and entertainment), saturated with more and more invasive offers.

The publishers that went under were not the ones that seemed most fragile, but rather some of the big players that were aiming to compete with the duopoly. Why? Enrique Redel, publisher at Impedimenta, answers first and gives us the lowdown: austere economies, lightweight structures, the search for niches… “In the last few years, average sales of our books have increased by 30%. A book that would have sold 1,000 copies now sells 1,300. But if trends changed and Impedimenta had no future, it wouldn’t destroy me. That wasn’t one of the aims from the start”.

The publishers talk to us about how they have survived: Luis Solano from Libros del Asteroide, Juan Casamayor, publisher from Páginas de Espuma, Manuel Borrás, founder of Pre-Textos, and Julián Rodríguez, publisher from Periférica.
