The great Spanish language trade shows gather in the Retiro, Madrid.

More than just the sale of books, our objective is to create readers that will develop into a population of critical thinkers to help with the maturity and development of our country,” remarked Carlos Alvariño Ordoñez, Director of the Book Fair in Peru, in a convention organized by Acción Cultural Española (Spanish Cultural Action).

Also present at this meeting were the show directors from Guadalajara, Buenos Aires, Bogotá and Madrid.  It is the first time that the directors of the five most important Spanish-speaking trade shows come together in order to share experiences, impressions, expectations, talk about common problems and establish future strategies in distribution as well as networking and financing.     The Madrid Book Fair is the oldest and most visited trade show of its kind, having celebrated 76 editions and visited by two million readers each year.  “A higher number than visitors to the great museums and in only 17 days,” commented Manuel Gil, new Director of the Book Fair in Madrid, who said that, although they have not been determined yet, small changes are coming.  One of those may be extended show hours during weekends as established in other countries.
