The one hundredth anniversary of any celebrated author’s birth does not come along too often for a country. For that reason, Mexico is pulling out all the stops for the centenary of Juan Rulfo (1917-1986) ...

with the celebration of nearly 100 activities during the course of 2017 to commemorate this ephemeris, which falls on May 16.  Various private sector organizations and government entities are planning not only exhibitions and colloquia to consider the work of the creator of Pedro Páramo (1955) and The Burning Plain (1953), but also special editions of his most famous works, as well as theatrical performances, concerts and even documentaries about the writer’s life. This whole panoply of events  pays homage to the first Mexican writer to be awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for Letters, this in 1983, and subsequently awarded to his fellow countrymen Álvaro Mutis and Carlos Fuentes.
