Q&A: Children’s author Isabel Sanchez Vegara

The Spanish author talks about her children’s books series, “Little People, BIG DREAMS,” which focuses on women who have left their mark on history.

By age six, girls are more likely to believe boys are smarter than members of their own gender, according to a study published in Sciencejournal last month.

The study, which examined when gender stereotypes about "high-level intellectual ability," found that "gendered notions of brilliance are acquired early" and, at six, girls also start to avoid games or activities said to be for "really, really smart" children.

But at least one children's books series is trying to fight back against that effect by telling the inspiring stories of women who overcame adversity and made history by pursuing their childhood dreams.

Accompanied by vibrant, cartoon-like artwork and intended for readers ages 5 to 8, the Little People, Big Dreams series, authored separately by Isabel Sánchez Vegara and Lisbeth Kaiser, kicked off with Sánhez Vegara's book on iconic Frenc fashion designer Coco Chanel and has gone on to featurethe likes of British actress and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn, Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, American civil rights activist Rosa Parks and American poet and activist Maya Angelou.

The latest books, available in stores March 2, will focus on the lives of English crime novelist Agatha Christie and Polish-French scientist Marie Curie.
