In 2016 81,391 books were published in Spain, of which 28% were in digital format

The publishing sector in Spain published 81,391 titles in 2016, according to data from the ISBN Agency, a figure that reflects a two-point rise of digital editions from last year, which in turn means that digital books were 28% of the total.

According to the Federation of Editor Guilds of Spain (FGEE), children books, as well as young adult and didactic books amounted to 22.8% of the total of published books, due to the fact that textbooks and curriculum materials were adapted to LOMCE. The number of digitally edited titles was 23,061, which according to the FGEE is evidence that Spanish publishers are betting heavily on that format, despite the fact that the invoicing for this type of books only represents 5% of the total of the publishing industry –a very similar situation to the one seen in countries such as France, Germany, or Italy.

For this reason, publishing houses insist on the need of developing policies for the protection of intellectual property and to fight against piracy, since according to them “a good policy in this regard would undoubtedly contribute, to increase the number of books published in all formats, and particularly in digital format.”
