Días de Cine presents “El gran mogollón” this week

The movie, based on Andrés Madrid's “Ayer España enrojeció”, is featured this week at the Días de Cine Reading Club. This initiative is sponsored by the America Reads Spanish program and the American Library Association to promote literature and the Spanish language in American libraries and universities.

This week, Días de Cine Reading Club presents “El gran mogollón” with Pedro Ruiz, Amparo Muñoz and Agustín González, directed by Ramón Fernández. The movie will be available until May 20th to the participating libraries and universities.

In a Western, Mediterranean country with a big following of bullfights and football, legislative elections are held and “the Great Spongers” are chosen as leaders. Each leader feels that his place is guaranteed and some prepare to take the presidency of the party of “the Great Spongers” when they get a surprise: the “P.E.R.” [“Revolutionary Ecologist Party”] wins by a large margin. Lords clamor angrily, ladies cry uncontrollably, future managers abandon their posts. The UCD [“Central Democratic Union”] prays the rosary as a family and the PCE [“Spanish Communist Party”] take Russian classes. The Pope is frightened, Thatcher is nervous, Mitterrand cries, Fraga rides again, Felipe speaks with a Castilian accent, Alfonso Guerra attacks, Carrillo smokes, Leopoldo becomes petrified, Landelino makes the sign of the cross, and Suarez sends Reagan to where he should have been for a long time. In short, “the Great Spongers” stir up trouble.

The Días de Cine Reading Club is an initiative sponsored by the America Reads Spanish program and the American Library Association to promote literature and the Spanish language in American libraries and universities. This initiative involves free viewing of cinematic adaptations of literary works included in the online collection of titles.

The program is offered at no cost to U.S. libraries and universities. To participate, libraries simply have to register and send the form provided at the America Reads Spanish website. They will receive an exclusive user password via e-mail. This password will allow them to enjoy, legally and free of charge, public viewing of the movie of the week via online streaming at a library or university. All it requires is a computer and internet connection. For more information click here or send an email to Miami@comercio.mineco.es.
