The 54-year-old-Spanish author won the prestigious award for his novel “La invención del amor."

According to Global Post, “the jury for the award - accompanied by a cash prize of $175,000 and a sculpture by Martín Chirino - was headed by Manuel Rivas, who said the winning entry 'reveals the transformative power of the imagination and its ability to construct new existences'".
