The publisher was created by John Grijalbo, who started publishing books in Mexico in 1939, then founded "Editorial Grijalbo" in Barcelona, Spain, in 1962. In 1989 the company was bought by the Italian group Mondadori, and Grijalbo-Mondadori was formed, with all Grijalbo companies in Spain and America.
