The audiobook boom in Spain.

It’s increasingly common to find writers who prioritize audio, and prestigious authors who trust the format to help enhance the reading experience.

For some, audiobooks were a tool of the lazy; a way to know what a book was about for an elementary, high school, or college exam. Little by little, this stigma is coming to an end, thanks in part to publishers who are also changing their ways. One clear example is latest Planeta Award winner, which has been adapted to this format. “When they told me about it, I thought it would help the novel reach more people, because there are people who, either because of vision problems or time constraints, cannot read as much as they would like,” explains Santiago Posteguillo, author of I, Julia. The 700-page book was the 2018 recipient of the Planeta Award and is now offered as about 25 hours of audio-based literature.
