The author Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio dies at 91

Born in Rome in 1927, the writer Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio, author of ‘El Jarama’, died today in Madrid at 91, according to information provided to EFE from his publishers.

A member of the 1950s generation, he received the Cervantes Prize in 2004 (he stated that he felt a sense of panic and agoraphobia when the ministry informed him of the award) and the Premio Nacional de las Letras [National Literature Prize] a few years later. He was the son of writer Rafael Sánchez Mazas, one of the leading ideologues of Falangismo (on whose failed assassination Javier Cercas based his novel ‘Soldados de Salamina’) and of an Italian mother, Liliana Ferlosio. He grew up in an environment rich in intellectualism and spent his first years of study with the Jesuits, eventually studying Philology in which he earned a doctorate.
