Radio journalist Juan del Val won the 2019 Primavera Novel Prize with ‘Candela

The jury, presided by Carme Riera and composed of Antonio Soler, Gervasio Posadas, Fernando Rodriguez Lafuente and Ana Rosa Semprun, decided yesterday at a lunch held in Madrid that this year’s winner would be Candela by Juan del Val.

The jury underlined the tragicomic pulse of this urban drama, its sense of humor, its fresh narrative and its cast of realistic characters, full of resignation and desires.

Candela is a 40-something woman with a normal life, used to being alone, extremely observant and with a dry wit. Her days pass without great surprises while she works as a waitress in a bar she runs alongside her grandmother and her one-eyed mother. A local bar, in which, through her clients, she lives out her whole life.
