South / Sur by Antonio Soler receives the Francisco Umbral Prize

The jury has highlighted “the extraordinary range of characters and variety of different linguistic styles” of the novel.

The novel South [Sur] (Galaxia Gutenberg), by Antonio Soler, has been awarded the 8th Francisco Umbral Prize at Book of the Year 2018. The jury bestowed the €12,000 award, recognizing the work’s “extraordinary range of characters and variety of different linguistic styles”, which form “a sweeping period portrait”. “It’s a prize for a profoundly literary work,” said Fernando R. Lafuente, an ABC collaborator and member of the jury. “In South [Sur] there is a rich description of characters in the desolate setting of a city like Málaga, with all its nooks and crannies. Its harshness is comparable to the harshness of the times in which we’re living. This novel is going to be a milestone in Spanish narrative.”
