Eduardo Mendoza takes us back to 1968 in Barcelona. Rufo Batalla receives his first assignment as a newspaper journalist to cover the wedding of an exiled prince to a beautiful young lady of high society. Coincidences and misunderstandings lead him to befriend the prince, who entrusts him to write the chronicle of his peculiar story, among other things. The oppressive atmosphere of gray Francoist Spain will soon feel too small for Rufo, who will travel to New York with little money, high hopes, and the vague ambition of doing something exciting with his life. There are two ways of telling the story, how it happened and how we lived it.
