Ramón Gil Novales, The Prolific Post-War Author from Aragon Has Died

He made his mark as a translator, a playwright and narrator. Ramón Gil Novales, novelist, translator, writer of stories and playwright, died this Monday in Barcelona at the age of 90.

He was born in 1928 in Huesca and was the brother of historian Alberto Gil Novales (who passed away two years ago). The writer began reading Law at the University of Zaragoza but stated that he gave up his studies "due to lack of interest". Soon after he took up translation in Barcelona, ??first for Seix Barral and then at Plaza & Janés, where he also wrote reports and took on almost all the tasks of a publishing house. Besides his own writing, Gil Novales translated over 50 books. Among other authors, he translated Marguérite Duras, Henry Miller (with whom he corresponded for his version of The Colossus of Maroussi) and Virginia Woolf, as well as a screenplay adaptation of Henry James for television and another adaptation of Arnold Wesker for theater. As a dramatist, he was part of the realist generation of the ‘60s, alongside Lauro Olmo, José M. Rodríguez Méndez and Carlos Muñiz, among others.
