Why is World Book Day celebrated on April 23?

World Book Day is celebrated on Monday, April 23rd, just like every year. It is a commemoration which is celebrated across the world, and which above all aims to encourage reading,.....

but also to defend and protect copyrights and the publishing industry. Despite this, the establishment of an international book day is a relatively recent event. It was in 1995 that UNESCO approved, as proposed by the International Publishers Association, the celebration of World Book and Copyright Day, which is its full name. The date was not chosen at random, as it is an important day in the history of literature. April 23rd marks the death of Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, William Wordsworth and Josep Pla. It is also the date on which Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Maurice Druon and Halldór Laxness were born.
