The 'Historical Dictionary' hits its first growth spurt: 1,057 new articles and growing

The RAE team, headed by José Antonio Pascual, has finally obtained the necessary conditions to keep the project alive. The Historical Spanish Dictionary e (Diccionario histórico del Español), the longtime dream of the Royal Spanish Academy of the Spanish Language (RAE), ......

which had been postponed a thousand times, has started to put forth root. This afternoon, the RAE announced that it has "1,057 new articles on the online consultation platform, articles that contain 1871 meanings, 150 secondary meanings, and more than 22,000 examples, taken from various corpora.” The real good news is that the project, which had until now been smothered by the lack of funds, has landed a sponsor, Inditex, a sufficiently appointed professional team, and a commitment to continuity. From now on, every year there will be rich harvests like this one. "There have been times when there were only three people working, but now we have eight lexicographers, one IP person, a coordinator –which is me— and José Antonio Pascual as the member of the Academy in charge," explained Mar Campos, who have been a part of the project since 2010. "Stability is also very important. We now have at the very minimum five years more to work."
