Grant for bilingual books increases Woodland Library collection

The Woodland Public Library is the recipient of a grant to purchase bilingual books through the California State Library-funded California Immigrant Alliance Project.

Abigail Craig of the Woodland Library reported the grant allows the purchase 493 new Spanish and English bilingual books for children, bolstering the city’s existing bilingual collection.

“We purchased board books, easy readers, picture books, children’s fiction, and a large selection of non-fiction titles,” stated Craig.

“Based upon this influx of new material we have separated out our bilingual book collection which now can be found adjacent to the Spanish collection in the children’s room,” Craig added.

The goal of the grant is to connect immigrant families to books in their own language and provide scaffolding to families beginning to learn English. This collection is a great addition for Spanish and English speakers alike as the text is present in both languages, Craig added.
