Argentinian Mariano Quirós wins the Tusquets Prize for Best Novel

Argentinian writer Mariano Quirós (1979) was the winner of the XIII Tusquets Editores Prize for Best Novel of 2017. A jury led by Juan Marsé and composed of Almudena Grandes, Antonio Orejudo, Daniel Ruiz García (the previous year’s winner) and publisher Juan Cerezo decided by a majority vote to award the prize to Una casa junto al Tragadero (A house next to the Tragadero).

Quirós’ novel was chosen from a total of 472 works of Ibero-American authors. The jury highlighted the sheer power of the story it tells, a story of survival in the midst of a hostile natural environment (Tragadero is a town located in northern Argentina); the hypnotic allure of the series of ambushes and perils that El Mudo (The Mute), the protagonist of the novel, has to face; and its efficacious structure. Quirós is the third Argentinian writer to obtain the Tusquets Prize for Best Novel.
