Westby graduates bring a taste of Spain to students

Before class of 2017 Westby Area High School graduates, Beta DeFlorian and Cody King, became alumni they put together a Spanish 4 class presentation they entitled “Fiesta De Los Ninos”.

The special program was held in Alison Nelson’s kindergarten class at Coon Valley Elementary School in May. DeFlorian and King were two of only three students in Kara Timmel’s Spanish 4 class and joined forces in hopes of sparking an interest within younger generations to continue learning Spanish as they get older.

To complete their Spanish Immersion Project, which they created entirely on their own, DeFlorian and King decided to expose students to the Spanish culture in a fun and exciting way. They divided their project into four different stations, with students rotating through each one. The first station served homemade Churros for taste testing; the second station involved playing with maracas; the third station taught students the Spanish translation for colors through the use of coloring books; and the fourth station allowed students to come together as a group and break open a Pinata.
